Lower School

Beginning a lifelong love of discovery.

The Lower School provides the foundation. From an early age, Steward students begin to discover that the world is a fascinating place. Field trips, performances, and community service are creatively integrated into the academic curriculum at every level.

Our JK students get a hands-on look at life on a real farm, while our fourth graders help our kindergartners travel the virtual globe.

The third-grade safety patrol warmly greets Lower School students every morning. Those same students look forward to visiting state landmarks when they delve into Virginia history as fourth graders. These students are also busy getting to know early explorers through art and journalism. By fifth grade, students begin tackling deeper topics like the Civil War and civil rights. Each grade level brings a new horizon with a journey full of exciting discoveries along the way.

Our experience shows that with our small classes and high degree of personal attention, students can be introduced to a broad spectrum at a young age. Fine arts, foreign language, science, and mathematics all serve to make school an exciting place for Steward students from day one. In the process, our students gain skills in asking questions, reasoning, and solving problems. By the end of Lower School, your child will know much about the world, will want to know more, and will have discovered in himself or herself a capable and caring individual.
