Congratulations to the founder of Steward’s Latino Education Advancement Program (LEAP), Melanie Rodriguez, who has been named a Persona de Poder (Person of Will and Power) by Radio Poder, Richmond’s popular Latin radio station. At a ceremony on October 15 at the Science Museum of Virginia, Mrs. Rodriguez and her fellow honorees were lauded for their contributions to helping Virginia’s immigrant and Latin American communities.
In 2007, Mrs. Rodriguez founded LEAP, a tuition-free, four-week summer program at Steward for Latino students entering grades 8-12. Small classes, dedicated teachers, and college counseling combine for an enriching experience designed to contribute to high school success and college readiness. Mrs. Rodriguez, who also taught Spanish at Steward, retired in 2022 after serving for 32 years at the School.
The award ceremony took place in conjunction with ¡VIRGINIA FIESTA!, a day-long celebration of science and culture that highlighted the contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities in Virginia. Events included a community fair, vendors, food trucks, and cultural performances.
“The award ceremony was wonderful, and being recognized for my LEAP accomplishments was heartwarming,” said Mrs. Rodriguez. “And receiving a signed letter from the Governor of Virginia was a nice touch.”
Ms. Rodriguez is passionate about the LEAP program and all that it offers.
“LEAP has been able to help over 600 youth since its inception,” she said. “Nine of the students who graduated from the program went on to attend The Steward School … and they graduated with honors!”
