The Middle School Student Council Association (SCA) held its annual Transfer of Power ceremony on May 12 in the Lora M. Robins Theatre. Four Spartans serve in leadership roles and are known as officers. During the ceremony, outgoing officers were honored, and incoming officers — elected by their peers — were installed.
Outgoing SCA officer Colton Rhyne ’30 explained, “The overall aspects of being in the Middle School Student Council Association are leadership and service. You get to give back to the community that has supported you in so many ways.” He added, “Steward traditions such as the Transfer of Power allow students to experience things that are valuable to the Steward school culture. The ceremony may seem like a small event, but its roots are deep and meaningful.”
Middle School teachers Alyssa Kovach (world language) and Wallace Inge (social studies) serve as SCA faculty advisors.
“The purpose of the SCA is to bridge the gap between students and staff to make sure the students’ ideas aren’t just heard but acted on,” said Ms. Kovach. “We’re dedicated to improving school life for Middle Schoolers.” Ms. Kovach and Mr. Inge serve as role models and ensure that every student has a stake in what happens in the Middle School. “SCA members’ dedication to school and to community service is one of the things that makes Steward such a great place to be!” said Mr. Inge.
Colton and his fellow outgoing officers, Tabbi Akinfolajimi ’30, Madelyn Griffin ’30, and Lilly Kersey ’30, were thanked for their service as they stood onstage in the theatre. Then, newly elected SCA officers Reuben Browning ’31, Eliza Fromer ’31, Yuna Harris ’32, and Morgan Manry ’32 were welcomed. The audience of Middle School students, faculty, and staff cheered and applauded as the new members each recited the official SCA oath of office.
Reuben, who served as a grade-level representative for 2025-26, said, “I am excited to take on a bigger role in leadership as an officer and work with the other officers to problem-solve. I look forward to what’s to come!”
The dedication and hard work of the SCA illustrate Steward’s
core values of care & respect and civil discourse.
Mr. Inge noted, “In April, Steward’s Middle School SCA earned the National Council of Excellence - Gold Level from the National Association of Student Councils. This was the third consecutive year that Steward earned this distinction, and it reflects Ms. Kovach’s tremendous work with the Middle School SCA!”
To cap off the ceremony in true Steward style, mascots Sparty and Spartina joined the students onstage to “knight” them with their Spartan swords.
