Middle School Literary Café

The Steward School
Poetry, prose, and a shared love of writing
On April 29, a group of authors gathered on the Bryan Innovation Lab patio after school to read selections of their writing at the inaugural Middle School Literary Café. Amid the sweet sounds of birds singing in the nearby garden, the audience enjoyed pieces that ranged from touching to humorous to thought-provoking. The event was sponsored by the Middle School Creative Writing Club, which is led by English Teacher Mary Hopkins.

The literary gathering is just one example of Steward’s public-speaking curriculum. Throughout their tenure, Spartans of all ages have lots of opportunities to practice their public speaking skills, from Lower School Oratorical to class presentations to Senior Speeches

Steward’s 2025-26 schoolwide theme of nature has inspired faculty, including Ms. Hopkins, to build connections with the outdoors during the school day and at after-school happenings.

“This was such a lovely way to spend time outside with an enthusiastic group of writers and some of their peers and teachers,” said Ms. Hopkins. “Writing is often a singular process; it was a gift to hear students (and a few faculty and staff) share their words with an appreciative audience.” The literary café was also a writerly example of Steward’s core values of individuality and inspiration.

Ryan Littlefield ’30 read her poem “Colors of the Moon.” An excerpt:

In NASA’s most recent exploration, they discovered that the moon has color. But haven’t we always known? In the way that the moon announces her reign of the night with rippling reds and pinks in the dusk. As she steals colors from the day and sprinkles them into the starry night. Fog, like the train of a woman’s white dress, whispers under the moon.

Ryan said, “Writing is a way for me to express myself, and when I write, I feel as though I have at my fingertips the ability to explore undiscovered worlds.” She added, “Being outside for the event made me feel as if I wasn’t just reading to my peers but to nature. Hearing the carefully crafted writings alongside birdsong and community chatter allowed me to be more present.”
