Standout Spartan: Lindsey Jennings '04

The Steward School
This Spartan cherishes lifelong Steward connections
When Lindsey Jennings ’04, director of philanthropy for ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation, ran into Steward’s Cancer Awareness Club in May at the ASK 5K and Fun Run, there were smiles all around. Ms. Jennings, who began her role at ASK in January, was thrilled to meet the Cancer Awareness Club’s hardworking students and faculty advisor, Jen Maitland, and to reunite with her former coach, Todd Serr. The 5K was the culmination of months of fundraising for the Cancer Awareness Club’s ASK fundraising efforts (including the club’s annual Clips for Cancer event, held in February); the group collected a whopping $6,320 in donations!

“It was a joy to meet Ms. Maitland and the students who are making a difference in the lives of children with cancer,” said Ms. Jennings. “These students are already developing what I believe is essential to building good character: helping others. That is a hallmark of being a Spartan, and I am glad to see it still at the center of student learning and life.” She added, “I also enjoyed seeing Mr. Serr again … he was my cross-country coach when I was in high school more than 20 years ago!”

ASK’s mission is to make life better for children with cancer and their families.
Ms. Jennings explained, “Our work provides support for families during a difficult time, whether that is to relieve financial hardship, reduce the strain of isolation, or ensure kids don’t fall behind in school because of a cancer diagnosis.”

Steward’s Cancer Awareness Club was among ASK’s top fundraising teams.

“What this tells me about Steward students is that they possess compassion and empathy, and are philanthropic at an early age,” noted Ms. Jennings. “I love the word ‘philanthropy’: it means ‘love of humanity,’ and when students recognize early the importance of helping others, they are set up to lead a life committed to making the world a better place.”

Ms. Jennings credits the leadership and service opportunities she had at Steward for her college and career success.

“I started a club, pursued art, and learned to lead by serving on the Honor Council and as class president,” she shared. “And I had amazing teachers who cared for me as an individual as I evolved into an adult. My art teacher, Rugene Paulette, remains a lifelong mentor and honorary family member. Thanks to Steward, I was the first in my family to graduate with a four-year college degree and later earn a master’s degree.”

Ms. Jennings stays connected to Steward in lots of ways. She has displayed her artwork in the Carolyn R. Brandt Gallery, and she attends events honoring former teachers. In addition, she has volunteered several times on Alumni Inspiration Day.

“The best part of being a member of the Steward community is meeting the next generation and seeing a glimpse of the good they will do in the world,” she said.
