Standout Spartan: George Guthrie '29

Congratulations to George Guthrie ’29 for earning a spot in the bass section of the 2026 Senior Regional Orchestra. George competed against other high school bassists from across the region to earn a position in the ensemble and is now eligible to audition for All-Virginia Orchestra. The Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association’s Central Region is composed of schools from the City of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. The Central Region Senior Orchestra Concert will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, at Cosby High School in Chesterfield County.

George, who has been playing stand-up bass since the fifth grade, said, “I enjoy learning from my mistakes and achieving a result I didn’t think was possible.” He looks forward to rehearsing with the Senior Regional Orchestra.

“I don’t know what songs I will play with the SRO yet, but they will probably be challenging,” he said. “The best thing about being a Spartan is making use of the freedom to pursue my interests alongside a supportive community.”
